Full details

The aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with Earth's atmosphere high above the ground. Witnessing the lights from the ground requires clear, dark skies - which is why Iceland, with its remote landscapes and minimal light pollution, is one of the world's premier Northern Lights destinations. Just a short drive from Reykjavík, experienced guides can reach areas of complete darkness quickly and easily - a significant advantage when hunting the aurora.

What To Expect:

Once you have booked your Northern Lights tour, simply be ready at your designated pick-up location before the scheduled departure time and let your expert guides take care of the rest. As the tour heads out of the city and into the Icelandic countryside, your guide will share fascinating facts about the Northern Lights and the locations you are visiting. As soon as the aurora is spotted, you will have plenty of time to take photos and soak up one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles. Staff are always on hand to help with camera settings and photography tips throughout the evening.

  • Northern Lights tours depart daily during the winter season from November through to March, with an additional seasonal window from late August to mid-April.

  • Pick-up time: 5.30pm

  • Tour duration: Approximately 3.5 hours. Please note that indicated return times can vary due to road and weather conditions.

  • Pick-up starts 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. The bus can arrive at any point during that 30-minute window. You are responsible for being ready and visible at your designated bus stop or outside your hotel or guesthouse in time for collection.

  • Please note that pick-ups from some Reykjavík hotels and guesthouses have been affected by restrictions imposed by Reykjavík City Council. Drop-off may not be directly in front of your hotel or guesthouse but at designated bus stops nearby due to street closures and bus operation restrictions in the city centre.

  • If you miss your pick-up, you will need to make your own way to BSÍ Bus Terminal in time for your tour departure at your own cost.

Transfers are available to and from designated bus stops across Reykjavík. If your hotel is not listed below, your pick-up and drop-off point will be BSÍ Bus Terminal - from here you will need to make your own way to and from your hotel at your own expense.

  • Northern Lights sightings are not guaranteed - the tour is weather and aurora activity dependent.

  • If the weather and aurora forecast is not promising enough, the tour may be cancelled. Guests with existing bookings will be offered the option to rebook for another date or receive a full refund, provided they have not already joined a departure.

  • Once you have joined a departure, the tour is non-refundable regardless of whether the Northern Lights are visible. If the aurora is not seen during your tour, you are invited to rebook for another evening free of charge. Rebooking tickets are personal and non-transferable.

  • Children are welcome on the tour, however as this can be a long and cold evening, it may not be suitable for children under 6 years old.

  • The tour uses larger coaches - it is not a small group experience. Small group tours are also available.

  • Dress warmly and wear sturdy waterproof footwear. Recommended clothing includes thermal layers, a winter hat, scarf, gloves, and warm socks. Please also be aware that conventional facilities are not available at aurora viewing locations.

  • A 100% cancellation fee applies to bookings cancelled 24 hours or less before the tour.
